Rory McIlroy Interview

The OMEGA brand ambassador, a winner of four Majors including two US PGA Championships, reflects on his most memorable on-course moments, his mental and physical preparation and what it would be like to shoot 59

The Ulsterman lets one fly down the 18th at Whistling Straits

Everyone has moments in life they would describe as their best. Whether on the course, or off it, what’s the day, or even the second, that means the most to you?

Golf is a game filled with so many memorable moments, and I am lucky to have had some great ones (and a few disappointments). From first getting my European Tour card in 2007 to securing my first victory in Dubai in 2009, I put those moments up there with times that will remain with me forever - the times I first believed in myself as a professional golfer. But the two moments that mean the most to me are winning the US Open in 2011 on Father’s Day (and a great hug from my dad on the green) and the 2014 Open Championship with my mum waiting on the back of the 18th to greet me. Those were very special moments indeed.

What do you like about OMEGA as a brand, and do you have a favourite watch?

I’ve always liked OMEGA watches, mainly for the creativity, evolving designs and the craftsmanship. I would say I also share their vision of striving for greatness and pushing boundaries to achieve goals. Most recently, I picked out the Speedmaster “Dark Side of the Moon”, which I wore when I lifted the trophy at the Wells Fargo Championship.
