2011 Review

Alex Jenkins turns his attention to the highlights – and a couple of the lowlights – that made professional golf such compelling viewing last year

Team of the Year

Gary Woodland (left) and Matt Kuchar (right)

The American duo of Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland put in a sublime performance at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup on Hainan Island in November, while the European women's team emerged victorious at the Solheim Cup thanks to an gutsy display on the final day. But it was United States' resounding win over the Internationals at the Presidents Cup that deserves top honours.

Over the sensational Composite Course at Royal Melbourne – arguably the standout venue of 2011 – the Americans defeated Greg Norman's heavily-fancied side by 19-15. The key was the foursomes, a format the US has struggled with at the Ryder Cup. Fred Couples' men recorded eight points from 11 matches to give the US a hefty lead heading into the final-day of singles. Although Tiger Woods' overall performance was perhaps a little overrated in the aftermath – he lost three of his five matches, including a whopping 7and 6 defeat to Adam Scott and KJ Choi when in partnership with Steve Stricker – it was Woods who secured the winning point thanks to a comprehensive victory over Aaron Baddeley.

Winners: US Presidents Cup team
Notables: European Solheim Cup team, US Omega Mission Hills World Cup team
