Final Shot with David Leadbetter

One of the world’s leading golf instructors, students include Nick Faldo and Ernie Els, talks about his favoruite player, best pupil and the art of coaching

With Nick FaldoSo, who’s your best student?

Probably was Nick Faldo because when we started together, he was very much down on his game. He was the perfect student because he would do whatever I said. He was very self-driven.

How did you Faldo to rebuild his swing then went on to win 6 major championships?

Well, between a player and a coach there should be a lot of trust. He basically trusted me completely, otherwise it wouldn’t work. We went outside of the box like using beach ball for training and other funny things. He was prepared to experiment and listen to me. 99% of the time he would just say, yea, I agree and let’s do this. Obviously, it was very successful as the result. And that’s where my career has started. In Britain, they looked at him as a falling star. When he recaptured the stardom, and became a new hero, my name was associated with him. So, it really helped from a career standpoint.
