Dunhill Delight - The Laughing Links!

As a world-class Dunhill professional tournament took place on the Old Course for the 33rd consecutive year, Charles McLaughlin was there to witness a nail-biting finish and an Asian team win. He also took time out from the action on the links to look into the history of this great event, why it’s so popular and the impact of the charitable donations directed by the Alfred Dunhill Links foundation

We talked to Louie about that win, his playoff loss in 2015 and his experiences at what he calls “the Dunny”. His more positive memories of 2010 aren’t simply because he won, but because with such a big lead going down the stretch, he could enjoy the experience and appreciate the crowd. Conversely, in 2015, when the Open ran onto the Monday, he was in a titanic struggle and couldn’t really drop his focus.

To me, that crowd (the biggest ever) was unique in that, with the corporates gone, it seemed everyone in Scotland took advantage of the unique opportunity to attend the final round of a major for only 10 quid! It was the most knowledgeable and appreciative crowd I’d ever seen at a major.

With eleven previous appearances at the Dunny, Louie doesn’t only have his “Ten Year” tie, he has a deep appreciation of the unique, fun aspect of this tournament.

“You are playing three fantastic courses, two of which host the Open, but in terms of pin placements and rough they aren’t set up to be as difficult. My best memory is when I shot 62 here at the Old Course, playing with my manager Chubby Chandler. That was special and was a course record at the time.”
