Shek O aside, do you have a favourite course in Asia - and what is the best you've played anywhere?
In China, there is no question that Spring City near Kunming is spectacular. The Fanling ‘Kunmingerers’, organized by Mike Grimsdick, hold an annual spring competition and it is one of the highlights on my playing calendar. In fact, I have played Spring City all but one of the years since it opened! The combination of the Robert Trent Jones II course on the Lake and the signature Jack Nicklaus course in the mountains, provide the diversity and challenge to make it the best.
Royal County Down in Northern Ireland and Pine Valley in the US are overwhelmingly my favourites. They are both challenging but the excitement of playing these treasures gets the pressure nerves rising.
But for me it's not so much about the course, it's about the friends you’re playing with. It's the chemistry between you and the other three guys you're with ... it's about having fun and enjoying a Cuban and a few drinks afterwards. That's how you remember the experience. I just hope to be able to keep fit and keep taking enjoyment from this great game.
