Memories of St Andrews

Asian Tour Chairman Kyi Hla Han, regarded as one of the pioneers who put Asian golf on the international map, shares his experience of featuring in The Open at St Andrews in 2000, the year after he won the Order of Merit title in Asia

The famous Hell Bunker on the par-5 14th hole on the Old Course

The Open Championship is rich in history and for me to play in St Andrews in 2000 was a great honour. I was exempted into the tournament after winning the Order of Merit in Asia in 1999 which was also a career highlight.

The Old Course is pretty straight forward and I remember we had fantastic weather throughout the week, considering the Scottish weather. It was a very sunny and warm week.

Tiger Woods ran away with the Claret Jug that year and his strategy was basically to stay away from the notorious pot bunkers. I recall him teeing off with four or five irons on almost every hole and he didn’t find a single bunker during those four rounds.
