Senior Open play-off halted

Bernhard Langer and Mark Wiebe will return to finish their Senior British Open play-off on Monday after their duel in the evening gloom was finally brought to a halt by bad light on Sunday.

Langer produced a double-bogey on the final hole in regulation

LONDON, July 28, 2013 (AFP) - Langer had squandered a golden opportunity to win the title without a play-off when he produced a double-bogey on the final hole, giving American Wiebe an unexpected lifeline.

And the German was also unable to finish off the job in the two halved extra holes that were squeezed in before darkness descended at Royal Birkdale.

The final round had been pushed well into the evening by stormy weather in Southport, north-west England, and when Langer, who led by three shots after the opening nine holes on Sunday, cracked on the last hole tournament organisers asked the players to start the play-off in an unsuccessful bid to finish the event on schedule.

Play will resume at 0800 local time on Monday.
