HONG KONG, 7 Jan 2016, (HK Golfer News Wire) - Chan played flawless golf through 16 holes to stand at five-under for the day before back-to-back bogeys at the 17th and 18th took the gloss off an otherwise accomplished performance.
The 22-year-old from Tuen Mun and Superal, the 2014 US Girls’ Junior champion, are locked together on five-under-par, two shots ahead of Chan’s international teammate Isabella Leung, who fired two eagles in a blistering 67, in third spot.
“I played good and overall I’m happy with my position,” said Chan, who is ranked 17th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking after enjoying a stellar first semester representing the University of Southern California, the number one college team in the United States. “I made a couple of stupid mistakes at the end but I’m not putting any stress on myself.”
Chan, a former World University champion, is seeking her maiden Ladies Open title and believes the key to the final round is how she performs over the New Course’s demanding opening stretch.
“There are a few birdie opportunities on the back nine but if I can get through the first eight holes in around level par I’ll be well placed,” said Chan. “I’m hitting the ball well and feeling good about my game. If I can keep that up then I should stand a good chance.”
