MIAMI, March 21, 2014 (AFP) - Fleck, an American who had been the oldest living US Open champion, won only three US PGA titles, all of them in playoffs, and his first was his biggest, coming in only his third major start.
After opening with a six-over 76 at Olympic Club in San Francisco, Fleck was three strokes behind leader Hogan entering the final round of the 1955 US Open.
But Fleck fired a 67 to force an 18-hole playoff with Hogan and then shot 69 to win by three strokes in the decider.
"Jack was a great player who will always be remembered for winning in legendary fashion, capturing one of the most memorable tournaments in history of our game," said US PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem.
"He embodied the ideals of a US Open champion for the remainder of his career."
Fleck, who also won the 1960 Phoenix Open and the 1961 Bakersfield Open in playoffs, served in the US Navy during World War II and saw action off Utah Beach on D-Day during the Normandy invasion in 1944.
