Retief Goosen hasn't been sighted on too many leaderboards of late, but his performance in the early rounds at St Andrews, where he was nine-under-par through three days, gave his fans plenty of hope. He was in part able to thank his supreme short-game skills for his position. The South African got up-and-down on 17 occasions after missing the green, the most of anyone in the field.

Spieth, who had entered The Open looking for his third consecutive Major title after wins at the Masters Tournament and the US Open, narrowly missed out at St Andrews. But he did have the distinction of making more birdies - 24 - than anyone else in the field. Zach Johnson, the champion, made 22.
