Miguel Angel Jimenez may have found that ’50 has come quickly but he sees no need to stop doing something he relishes

Celebrating Europe's victory at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles

As I’m mulling all this over, Jimenez utters some wise, age-defying words, with a glint in his eye: “Tomorrow doesn’t exist yet, but you keep working to be better than today.” When we turn to the Ryder Cup, the glint intensifies. “It’s always nice to be involved in the Ryder Cup,” he beams. “I love the event - you cannot compare it to any other tournament. It’s very special, very competitive. It will bring out all the best things from inside. I love the feeling. I’ve played several times, been vice-captain several times and of course I would love to be a captain one day.”

That that day is at least three and a half more years away, but Jimenez relished being part of Paul McGinley’s team at Gleneagles last year. “The atmosphere on the 1st tee was unbelievable,” he enthuses. “The skin on the back of the neck was going… whoop,” he says, trying to convey a major goosebump moment. “It was a beautiful feeling. It was fantastic last year. We won again this time, but golf always wins really with players like that, and that kind of spirit on the golf course from both teams. Golf is always going to stay on top.”
