Fitzpatrick is one of many aspiring youngsters who chose to go through the American college system in order to fine-tune his game. Despite staying just one semester before turning pro, Fitzpatrick played in five collegiate events, winning once and finishing in the top-five in three others.

He was the first English winner of the US Amateur in 102 years

Fitzpatrick first came to worldwide prominence in 2013 when he won the prestigious US Amateur Championship at Brookline Country Club. After beating Oliver Goss 4&3 in a 36-hole final, he became the first English winner of the event since Harold Hilton in 1911.

Fitzpatrick's victory in the US Amateur swept him to the top of the world amateur rankings, joining the likes of Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth as players who have been No 1 in the amateur game since the rankings were introduced in 2007.
