The same can't be said for the 27 holes that make up this exquisite IMG-designed golf course, which opened mere months ago on the north end of Phu Quoc -- an island just off the southwest coast of Vietnam that was only recently earmarked for tourism development.
Eight years ago I came here with a friend and had trouble figuring out what to do once we got there. There was the beach, of course – beaches with water so placid, so aquamarine and so inviting, I kept wondering whether our plane hadn’t inadvertently touched down off the coast of Thailand. But it was so, so quiet, little by way of formal diversion.
We ended up spending most of our time on motorbikes, exploring a land mass the size of Singapore that seemed to really only have one paved road. And that was fun. But whenever I was asked thereafter if Phu Quoc was worth checking out, I'd say, “Yes, but make sure you bring War and Peace.”
In other words, it wasn't for everybody.
