Doug Williams continued his dominance of the local senior golf scene with a hard-fought victory at the Hong Kong Seniors Close Amateur Championship at Discovery Bay Golf Club last month.
Williams started the final round two shots behind past winner Chu Koon-ching but overtook his rival with a solid front nine that saw him make the turn in two-over par. Although Chu battled gamely down the closing stretch, a Williams birdie at the par-5 16th, a hole Chu bogeyed, effectively ended the contest and the American-born Williams was able to cruise to his third consecutive win at the event.
With back-to-back victories at the Hong Kong Seniors Open Amateur in 2013 and 2014 Williams has now won five of the major local senior titles in a row.
"I struggled a bit on the greens and the gusty winds made it hard," said Williams, who closed with a three-over 74. "But it was tight out there. The last two times I won I did so quite comfortably so today was a lot different and it was fun. I have to give KC Chu a lot of credit. He's a formidable player."
Williams has a busy summer schedule ahead of him. In early June he'll be attempting to match his achievement of 12 months ago by qualifying for the US Seniors Open - a professional Major - before crossing the Atlantic to play in the Seniors Amateur Championship at historic Royal County Down in Northern Ireland.
