Top-10 One Major Wonders

Mak Lok-lin reflects on the year which saw three of the four majors seized by relative unknowns and the men from the past who failed to build on claiming one of golf's big four

1 Shaun Micheel

When Shaun Micheel suddenly appeared at the top of the leaderboard on day one of this year’s US Open it appeared that the American might finally achieve something after taking the 2003 US PGA Championship at the Oak Hill Country Club in New York.

He was ranked 169th in the world entering the event, but had the best four days of his career, scoring four under par while Tiger Woods could only manage 12 over. Only three players broke par on the brutal track; the others being “Hanging” Chad Campbell and Tim “Penguin” Clark - winner of the this year’s Players Championship.

Micheel briefly became famous again in 2006 when he publicly declared that he was suffering from low testosterone and was legally pumped full of hormones, then finished second to Tiger Woods in that year’s US PGA Championship. He has done nothing since and the win at Oak Hill remains his solitary win on the PGA Tour.
