Mo takes lead in windy Thailand

Korea's Mo Joong-Kyung surged to the top of the leaderboard in the third round of the King's Cup on Saturday, notching up a two-under-par 70 as windy conditions blew other players off course.

"I managed to figure out how to combat the winds," Mo said

BANGKOK, January 18, 2014 (AFP) - The 42-year-old had been trailing in third place at the $1 million Asian Tour event at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin, but stood tall against gusts that reached up to 36 kilometres (22 miles) an hour, shooting six birdies and four bogeys for a three-day total of nine-under-par 207.

Home favourite and previous leader Prom Meesawat of Thailand slipped to joint second with Filipino Angelo Que, who carded the day's lowest score with a 67.

Sweden's Rikard Karlberg, who had shared the lead with Prom, dropped to fifth place with a 74.

"At the start, I didn't expect the winds to be so strong," Mo said, according to a report by the Asian Tour.

"I managed to figure out how to combat the winds and I played pretty well coming down the stretch."

He credited his fitness regime for helping him keep pace with his younger rivals.

"I'm still feeling fine after 54 holes," he said.

"I've won before and I know what it's like to be in the final round and playing the game of your life for the last 18 holes. I just got to do what I've got to do which is to play each hole at a time and give myself lots of chances."

Que, who also managed the gusts to make a comeback Saturday after a disappointing second round 75, said: "You never know when you might have to play in a typhoon or calm weather conditions."

He said he was "happy" with his game. "I'm not going to think about the win. I just want to go out and have fun."

Despite slipping to second, Prom remained confident he could take his second Asian tour victory.

"It is still a very good position to be in as anything can happen. The door is still open," he said.

The tournament is the final event of the season on the Asian Tour calendar.
