MADISON, Mississippi, July 22, 2012 (AFP) - Stallings, 27, finished the event with a 24-under par total of 264, a tournament record at Annandale where heavy rain throughout the week wreaked havoc with the schedule but contributed to low scores on the softened course.
Jason Bohn closed with a five-under 67 to finish second on 266, two shots ahead of Billy Horschel who carded a 71 for 268.
Stallings, whose rookie season last year was highlighted by his victory in the Greenbrier Classic, had moved atop the leaderboard with back-to-back 64s in the second and third rounds -- finishing up his third round on Sunday morning along with much of the field before heading out for the final round.
Stallings led by two at the turn, but made his only bogey of the day at 14, where he was right off the tee.
He bounced back with birdies at 16 and 17. At 16 he landed his approach within three feet for a short birdie and drained a 12-footer at 17.
"It made that tee shot on 18 a lot easier," Stallings said.
Bohn birdied 18, but it wasn't enough to catch Stallings, who capped his round with a short par putt.
"Obviously, it's a special week," Stallings said. "Any time you win on the PGA Tour it's special. A lot of things and people went into winning this tournament and I'm very thankful."
After his strong rookie season, Stallings has battled torn cartilage in his ribs and two herniated disks in his back this year.
As he tried to play through the pain, his game suffered, prompting him to work with a sports psychologist.
"I hurt my confidence and hurt everything that came along with it," Stallings said. "I learned a lot of lessons through that."
Horschel was impressed by what he saw from Stallings.
"He played really well, swung the club well, made the putts when he needed to make the putts, and that's the way you win," he said.
