Ormsby claims maiden Asian Tour title

Australian Wade Ormsby claimed his maiden Asian Tour title at the Panasonic Open India Sunday, holding off Thai veteran Boonchu Ruangkit by just one stroke.

"I've played tournaments worldwide but to finally get a win in Asia is fantastic," said Ormsby

NEW DELHI, April 7, 2013 (AFP) - Ormsby overcame a triple bogey on the third hole to shoot a final round one-under-par 71 and win the $300,000 tournament.

Singapore's Lam Chih Bing, who led briefly during the final round, ended in third place after carding a level par 72. Shiv Kapur bogeyed two of his last three holes to finish three shots behind Ormsby in fourth place.

Ormsby birdied the second hole but stumbled with a seven at the next. But he showed his character by shooting birdies on the fifth, seventh and eighth holes to stay in the hunt.

He bogeyed the 12th and needed an 18-foot birdie conversion on 17, which proved decisive as Boonchu's challenge faded with a bogey on 16.

"I've played tournaments worldwide but to finally get a win in Asia is fantastic," said Ormsby in comments supplied by the organisers.

Boonchu, who at age 56 was trying to become the oldest winner in the Asian Tour history, seemed on course but the bogey on the 16th put paid to his hopes.

"Conditions were really tough out there the entire week. But to be able to play the way I did even at 56 years' old really says a lot about my game," said Boonchu.
