Matthew Fitzpatrick

The 21-year-old Englishman, who finished in a share of third at the UBS Hong Kong Open, has excelled since joining the pro ranks. Here's a bit more information of a player you're sure to be hearing a lot more about

He's a keen Sheffield United fan

Born in Sheffield in South Yorkshire, Fitzpatrick has long been a supporter of his local team, Sheffield United. The Blades were relegated from the Premier League the season before Fitzpatrick was born and have only made it back into the top flight once in his lifetime, in 2006.

He's one of the most accurate players on the European Tour

Fitzpatrick was one of only two players on Tour who ranked in the top-10 in both driving accuracy and greens in regulation, the other being South African Thomas Aiken. Fitzpatrick hit more than 70 per cent of fairways and 75 per cent of greens in the required number of shots last season.

His caddie was once banned from Augusta

His US Amateur win earned him an invite to play in the 2014 Masters, but his caddie fell foul of the Augusta National officials during a practice round. Lorne Duncan was suspended from being on Fitzpatrick's bag because he wore sandals – strictly forbidden during the tournament week. Duncan claimed he wore sandals due to a foot problem, but he was cleared to be restored to caddieing duty for the opening round after agreeing to change his footwear.

He was the first player since Bobby Jones to be low amateur at The Open and US Open

Having won the silver medal as leading amateur at The 2013 Open at Muirfield, Fitzpatrick went on to win low amateur honours at the US Open the following year at Pinehurst. In doing so he became the first amateur since Bobby Jones in 1930 to hold both titles at the same time.

He is the youngest player in the top-100 in the world

Following an incredibly consistent season, one in which he was unlucky not to claim European Tour Rookie of the Year honours (which went to Korea's An Byeong-hun), Fitzpatrick is the youngest player in the top 100 of the world rankings. He is 401 days younger than Jordan Spieth.
