Martin Kaymer Q&A

The two-time Major champion talks to Alex Jenkins about making his professional debut at the Hong Kong Open, his preparation for the Masters Tournament and the putt he made to clinch the 2012 Ryder Cup for Europe

Kaymer and fellow countryman Bernhard Langer have formed a close relationship

Do you have a favourite restaurant in Augusta that you go to?

Fortunately we always have a chef. Going out for dinner can be a pain during Masters Week. It’s super, super busy, and although as a player you can get a table, it’s so loud and there’s a lot of people who come up to you. It’s a busy week anyway. You just want to have some peace in the evenings. That’s why we bring a chef to the house.

You’ve holed some especially memorable putts in your career but the two that stand out would have to be the six-footer at the Ryder Cup in 2012 and the big putt on the 17th at Sawgrass last year. Two very different putts in two very different situations – but which is your favourite?

It has to be the one at the Ryder Cup because there was so much more emotion behind it. To win the Players has always been one of my goals, and to make the putt there was huge. But the Ryder Cup was even more special. After the Ryder Cup we flew from Chicago to Scotland and to see how much winning the Ryder Cup meant to the fans there, how happy it made them, was something I was very happy about. I cannot even imagine how they would have looked at me, how disappointed they would have been if I had missed that putt … or if Poulter hadn’t been able to put us in the position we were on Saturday. The outcome of the putt, the reception from those people in Scotland, was something I’ll never forget.
