Karrie Webb Interview

The seven-time Major winner reflects on her long career, the women’s game and an 11-year-old teeing it up at the US Women’s Open

Webb says she always feels ready to win a Major

How hard is it keeping up with the young whippersnappers nowadays?

I don’t really think about anyone’s age. I don’t think anyone’s golf ball knows how old they are. It’s all about playing as well as you are capable of. Just because someone is younger than me, it doesn’t mean that they are better than me.

What have been the biggest changes since you first arrived on Tour in the mid-1990s?

I think the popularity of women’s golf has continually grown throughout the world. It’s definitely a world game now. We pretty much cover every continent, and great players come from all over nowadays. It wasn’t like that when I first started out.

Your career has overlapped with some of the modern greats of the women’s game. Who have been your toughest, and most favourite, opponents?

You can’t leave Annika Sorenstam out of the conversation. She’s one of the best to have ever played the game and I obviously played with her throughout the peak of her career, so that was an experience. I’d also have to say Laura Davies, Se-Ri Pak and Lorena Ochoa. Some of those names aren’t in the Hall of Fame yet, but they will be some day.

It’s been a while now since you won a Major. Do you feel ready for another one?

I always feel ready to win a Major, it’s just a matter of doing it! I know I’m capable of it, it’s just going out there and believing that I can do it. I’ve already exceeded many career targets so I don’t set any goals like that now.
