Final Shot with Pan Cheng-tsung

The 24-year-old Taiwanese ace, who had a stellar amateur career before turning pro and winning in just his second Tour start, talks to Alex Jenkins about his favourite courses, who would be in his dream fourball and his most memorable on-course experience

The Olympic Club in San Francisco

Who would be in your dream fourball?

Gary Player, Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy. Gary Player has been my idol for years. I love how hard he works and like me he’s not a big guy. I have played a practice round with Luke Donald at the US Open before and he has such a great personality. He’s a really great guy on and off the course. And I love Rory’s swing. It’s so efficient. It really is the model golf swing.

What has been your most memorable moment on a golf course?

That would have to be winning The Players Cup on the Mackenzie PGA Tour of Canada earlier this year. It was only my second Tour event and I was three shots back at the turn of the final round. I just played really well over the back nine. I made some long putts including a 45-footer on the 17th to give me a two-shot lead. It was awesome. I was just shocked at how well I played.

What is the best thing about being a professional golfer?

Being able to travel to so many different places and experience the culture of different cities and countries is great. I’ve learned a lot just through travelling to events. But overall, just the fact that I play golf for a living. I just love playing this game.

And the worst?

Being away from my family and friends. Travelling is great but it means I do spend a lot less time with those who are close to me.

Pan Cheng-tsung will be playing at Venetian Macao Open, which takes place 15-18 October at the Macau Golf and Country Club. Entry to the US$1 million Asian Tour event is free.
