Captain Singh

Team Asia captain Jeev Milkha Singh, a two-time Asian Tour number one and multiple winner in Japan and Europe, talks about the honour of leading the continent into battle against Europe at the second edition of the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM in this in-depth interview. The Ryder Cup-style event takes place at Glenmarie Golf and Country Club from January 15-17.

With European captain Darren Clarke

After the first draw, how important would it be for Asia to get a positive result for Asian golf?

It’ll be good for Asian golf, it’ll be good for the confidence of our players and it’ll be great to get new sponsors in Asia to promote the game. The players will be happy as they would have proven themselves again and for the sponsors, they’ll be saying our boys are coming of age and have proven themselves against the best players in the world. Our boys will also start to think that if they can win the EurAsia Cup, they’ll be thinking of bigger goals like getting into the world’s top-10 and winning the biggest tournaments around the world. That’s the best way to move up.

Europe’s team looks like they will have a lot of rookies. How do you view this?

I think having first timers on the team, they’re going to be hungry and wanting to prove themselves. Most of the time, they will come through and do really well. It’ll be one or two who won’t come through but I’m expecting the rookies to always play well. It’ll be great for Europe as they will also be getting ready for the Ryder Cup as well.

What do you think the EurAsia Cup will do to Asian golfers over the long run?

Firstly, we will have the chance to come together to represent Asia in a team event once in two years. It’s our only team opportunity which is going to be the biggest team event for Asian golf. It’s good to see we can come together and good to see that we can play for our pride and honour.

How will you get the team to gel, considering that there will be players from various nationalities, languages and also from the Japan Tour?

I will invite them for team dinners and give them positive feedback about themselves, what they have achieved, what they have done, winning tournaments and let them have the same feelings when they get onto the first tee on the first day. Our team room will have photos of them with their last victories. These will give them positive vibes before they head out to the first tee.
