Final Shot with Grant Gibson

The head professional at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club talks about his most memorable moment on a course, who would be in his dream fourball and the strengths of his game

Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club

What’s your favourite course in Asia?

It sounds corny but Clearwater Bay would have to be up there. It’s a special piece of property and the changes that were made seven years ago have really made it a challenging par-70 layout. With the winds we have it plays different all year-round.

Because I’m pretty accurate off the tee I do favour courses that are tight and require a lot of thinking. Other courses I really enjoy are Nirwana Bali, the Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore and also the Norman Course at Mission Hills, which is as demanding as it comes.

Who would be in your dream fourball?

Greg Norman was my idol growing up, so he’d definitely be one. Tiger Woods - for what he’s done in the game. And the fourth would have to be my good mate Paul Riley, the head golf professional at Kau Sai Chau. With him in our group I’d at least get a chance to win some money.

What has been your most memorable moment on a golf course?

It feels a bit funny to say this but it would probably be when I won my last Hong Kong PGA event, at Clearwater Bay in June. I had been playing terribly and honestly never thought I had a chance to win. In the first round I started at the 10th and made five birdies in a row from the first to the fifth (my 10th to 14th holes). Then I finished bogey, bogey, bogey, double bogey to shoot 71. In round two I shot a pretty solid 68, with four birdies and two bogeys. It was really surprising. Even now I can’t quite believe it happened.
